IN FEAR

Case study 2 - IN FEAR

Two festival-goers get lost in the menacing Irish countryside in this electrifying psychological thriller.

In Fear is a horror/thriller film which is released in the UK on the 15th of November 2013.

Producers include James Biddle and director Jeremy Lovering.

In Fear will be shown in cinemas nationwide such as Cineworld, Vue, Odeon and Picturehouse in 2D format.

The Counsellor, The Butler, Turbo, Don Jon are films that will compete with In Fear in the same week.

I haven't seen much advertisement for this film as it is a low budget movie, they have to keep their costs to a minimum and advertising costs a lot of money which they don't have. However I have seen a TV advertisement on E4 for this film which advertised this film to students, and advertised Picturehouse cinemas. They have a trailer (which can be seen at the end of this post) which has almost 100,000 views on YouTube.

Iain De Caestecker stars as Tom, Alice Englert stars as Lucy, Allen Leech stars as Max.

It has a 5.2/100 on the website IMDb which have been reviewed by film critics and those that have seen this film previously at film festivals.

In-Fear
Iain De Caestecker and Alice Englert take a wrong turn in In Fear

In Fear was shown at the Sundance Film Festival on the 27th and 28th of April 2013. It was also shown at the FrightFest Film Festival from the 22nd-26th of August 2013.

In Fear was shot in Bodmin Moor in Devon and the nearby Cornish woods, as this is quite a remote place, this allowed them to add to the eerie effect and dramatic tension in this film as it is a remote area, unlike busy cities which would have a lot of buildings and traffic.

"The Best British chiller since The Descent"

- Daily Telegraph

IN FEAR

"In fear is an intense psychological horror about a young couple who fight to make it through the night"

Duration of Film : 1hr 25 Mins
Formats Available : 2D

Studio Canal and Film4 present In fear in association with Anton capital entertainment S.C.A a big talk pictures production. The Production Company Big Talk are known for their global success movies such as 'Hot Fuzz', 'Scot Pilgrim Vs. The World' Which was produced by  Nira Park as well and 'Paul'. The cast include Lain De Caestecker who plays Tom also known for being in the hit series Agents Of Shield and Vampire Diaries, Alice Englert as Lucy who is also known for the hit film Beautiful creatures and Allen Leech who plays Max who is also known for being in the hit series Downtown Abbey. Other cast included original music by Daniel Katznelson, Film editing by Jonathan Amos and Visual effects by Simon Klroe. Producers include James Biddle and Nira Park and director Jeremy Lovering. The film is due to be released on the 15th of November 2013 and is due to be shown in empire, Cineworld, Vue, showcase, Odeon, everyman, Picturehouse and Curzon. Filming for the film began in late November till late December in 2011 in Cornwall and although its in the ruins in Ireland It Was Shot In England all together there was 52 hours of footage.

Technology wise they used a variety while shooting the film. The film was shot digitally using an ARRI Alexa Canon 7D and a Go Pro for some of the scenes which allowed them freedom during the shoot. DOP David Katznelson did some lighting work to keep the shots from looking too Sam-Y in the dark "We had variety even though we weren't lighting it heavily". After shooting the film "It was a complete nightmare" to edit as they never had a script to refer to as the director wanted a realistic approach to the actors reactions. ARRI lighting Rental (lighting equipment supplied), Sapex Scripts (post -production script services) and TLO Film Services (action vehicles) are the companies who helped to make the film possibly.

The film was first previewed on January the 2013 in Sundance London who's review was " Less is more in a brilliantly conceived and executed British horror movie". The film was showed in America and London at Sundance. Other than the Sundance, Film4 frightfest previewed it on the 25th of Auguest 2013. Film4 frightest us the UK's Premiere international fantasy and horror film festival. Five days of premiers, previews and more. Other than London and America the film was previewed in France on the 1st of February 2013 at the Gerardmer Dantasy Film Festival,  Greece on the 23rd of September 2013 at the Athens Gilm Festival and in Ireland on the 24th of October 2013 at the Harrorthon Festival Dublin.  The Film however will be released nationally.

When it came to marketing In fear had a poster to get them started so the film would be established however as time went on the final poster previewed on the Empire website. A the Film4 fest  there was a Q & A session with the director and cast to engage the audience even further. Due to the fact In Fear is a low budget film their marketing availability is limited however they have there own Facebook page which has more than 600 likes and Studio Canal the advertise the film everyday on there twitter site with competitions which include people to win tickets to a very special preview of @bigTalk In Fear taking place November the 12th and free student preview on E4 Thursday 14th Of November. The BBC show also advertised a In Fear feature that they had done. Within the trailer which has over 87,000 views within the past month it advertises there website called www.InFearMovie.com  however the thrilling website starts of as www.sliceofparadise.info which is Ironic but after a few seconds it blackens out into the trailer by surprise. Later on In fear introduced different virais which ask questions such as "could you choose who will die" within each teaser trailer. Although the film is becoming more established each day the competition is fierce as on the same day premiers include 'The butler', 'The counselor' and 'Don Jon'.

Although the budget was low financing came about pretty quickly. "Very much so, yeah. I think again its a very low-budget film. So there's a point,  I mean its all done by mathematics and algorithms now, by marketing departments, and they look at what they can get and what they will spend,  and I think they looked at what we were asking for the way we were asking for the way we wanted to do it and they said "okay fine" that fits the model"

In Fear has had brilliant feedback and reviews such as "The best British thriller since the descent" - Daily Telegraph. "One of the best horror movies of the year" - Rotten Tomatoes, "A diverting,  mildly entertaining thriller" -Entertainment I.e, "genuinely gripped" - Mark Kermode, "An effective psychological thriller with a smart screenplay" - MovieScope even on their social people have commented "Must see this" and "Looks Really Good".

As of yet there are no awards except 'The Official Selection Of 2013 Sundance film festival' however the director Jeremy Lovering is nominated for 'Best Debuet Actor' at the 16th anual Moet British Independent Film Awards.

In Fear Research

  In Fear:

"Driving, lost and tormented in the night, primal fears of the dark and the unknown give way to fear that you have let the evil in, or that it is already there."

The movie was directed by Jeremy Lovering this being his first actual attempted at directing a movie and is directing the first episode to the new season of Sherlock. The producer, who is more experienced, is James Biddle who is also the producer of Hot Fuzz. The stars of the movie is Iain De Caestecker and Alice Englert. Iain is currently staring in Agents Of Shield and will be in How To Catch A Monster that is currently in post production. Alice Englert who is the main actress of Beautiful Creatures and usually acts in low budget movies/shorts.

The movie will be shown in Odeon cinemas only located in Braehead, Greenwich, Kingston, Liverpool ONE, Manchester, Norwich, Southampton and Trafford Centre.
In Fear was shown at the Sundance Film Festival on 27th and 28th of April 2013.

infearThe Movie is in competition with The Best Mans Holiday by Universal Studio and Charlie Countryman as they are all released on the 15th of November.
Since this is a small movie compared to other movies such as Thor it is harder for the producers to create advertisements. This is because low budget movies struggle to pay for advertisements because the limit of their funding causes them to focus their financial issues on other factors such as paying the actors.

The movie hasn't won any awards so far. This is possibly because its hard for a small movie to get noticed by an awards company. For example its unlikely this movie will win an Oscar because it isn't big budget enough as Thor The Dark World.
The filming location was in Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, England. By using a remote area it allows the director to have more freedom to were he films. Its also unlikely that they will be interrupted by people walking or driving pass.

"It's a very low-budget film.. they looked at what we were asking for and the way we wanted to do it and they said 'Okay, fine." - Jeremy Lovering

In Fear is only being released in cinemas in the north. It is not being released worldwide due to its low-budget. Information about In Fear is harder to discover because the public isn't as interested in this movie as they are about Thor The Dark World or other bigger budget movies. There it doesn't make sense for newspaper to review the movie because there isn't a high demand on  information about the movie. However most of the information that i gatherd was found on Idmb.com and on the Wikipedia webpage for Big Talk Productions.

Distribution:

The popular franchise of Thor has already developed a huge fan-base and this so how they distributed the new film to the public to get even more fans.

Supporting a fun run in Italy to promote Thor: The Dark World
This allows Thor to achieve a good name by helping out with the race but it also allows them to advertise their movie in a different way instead of a normal banner.
This big budget movie has been able to work with $200 Million allowing them to increase their advertisement campaign.
Thor has also being marketed in social networks such as Facebook and YouTube; by advertising on Facebook more people will see that Thor is releasing a new film which creates more interest in the second movie. This encourages people to go  see the movie in the cinema. Which gives the movie a higher gross. Thor has made $109.4 million worldwide already.
