IN FEAR

Case study 2 - IN FEAR

Two festival-goers get lost in the menacing Irish countryside in this electrifying psychological thriller.

In Fear is a horror/thriller film which is released in the UK on the 15th of November 2013.

Producers include James Biddle and director Jeremy Lovering.

In Fear will be shown in cinemas nationwide such as Cineworld, Vue, Odeon and Picturehouse in 2D format.

The Counsellor, The Butler, Turbo, Don Jon are films that will compete with In Fear in the same week.

I haven't seen much advertisement for this film as it is a low budget movie, they have to keep their costs to a minimum and advertising costs a lot of money which they don't have. However I have seen a TV advertisement on E4 for this film which advertised this film to students, and advertised Picturehouse cinemas. They have a trailer (which can be seen at the end of this post) which has almost 100,000 views on YouTube.

Iain De Caestecker stars as Tom, Alice Englert stars as Lucy, Allen Leech stars as Max.

It has a 5.2/100 on the website IMDb which have been reviewed by film critics and those that have seen this film previously at film festivals.

In Fear was shown at the Sundance Film Festival on the 27th and 28th of April 2013. It was also shown at the FrightFest Film Festival from the 22nd-26th of August 2013.

In Fear was shot in Bodmin Moor in Devon and the nearby Cornish woods, as this is quite a remote place, this allowed them to add to the eerie effect and dramatic tension in this film as it is a remote area, unlike busy cities which would have a lot of buildings and traffic.

There are a lot of special effects such as green screens used to add to the action/fantasy feel of the film.

At the moment, this film is available only at the cinema in 2D and 3D in a variety of nationwide cinemas such as Cineworld, IMAX and Vue.
It will also be available on DVD, Blu ray, by next year.

It is a big budget film which has proven to be very successful with the public so far as they made a huge $109.4 million worldwide already.

One main reason why this film is so successful is due to their marketing, they used a variety of marketing techniques such as posters, trailers on YouTube, trailers before other films in the cinema, billboards and many more.

Thor 2 was distributed by Walt Disney

A billboard in the US adversting Thor 2

This film is rated 12a so it is aimed at teenagers who enjoy action, adventure, fantasty films and Marvel fans. They also had merchandise along with their advertising to entice the fans, such as games, t shirts and comic books. This is ideal as many action fans may like collecting and it would interest them into watching the film.

Production, Distribiton, Marketing and Exhibition in the film industry

Production

There are three stages involved in producing a film. First of all, the pre production stage, the film must be planned and carefully designed. It starts off with an initial idea in the form of a story board where it will be developed. This is where the production team scout the location and characters for the film. The script is written and finalised by the team. Secondly, during the production the initial ideas are developed and shot with the scenery, props, characters, are used. During the post production then the film is edited, and special effects and music is added as part of the sound track.
There are many steps involved when creating a film. The four main stages are production, distribution, marketing and exhibition.

Distribution: is the way films go out from an edit house to an audience. There are many ways such as:
  • The cinema
  • DVDs
  • Blu ray
  • Netflix/LOVEFiLM

Marketing:  is promoting and advertising a new film.
This can be done in many ways such as:
  • Using trailers during TV advertisements and during the advertisements at the cinema
  • Billboards, posters, bus advertisements
  • Toys in Happy Meals to promote young people and their parents to watch a certain film aimed at young children.
Exhibition:  this is the way that audience can view films. Some independent production companies will not be able to show their films in the large cinema companies such as Cineworld or Odeon but do film festivals and small cinema firms.
